Here at Pinellas Animal Hospital we are committed to promoting Pet Dental Month all year round, not just in February. In support of this we offer a $25 discount coupon to every client who schedules their pets’ dental cleaning within 6 weeks of their pet’s examination with the doctor any time during the year. We will also be making that offer to those of you that have been anticipating a discount for Dental Health month throughout the month of February.
Dental x-rays give us the full story.
All dogs and cats need dental care throughout their lives. Regular pet dental care prevents pain, which is important. Dental care protects not only a pet’s mouth from gingivitis, periodontal disease and associated infection, but also the heart, kidneys and liver. This in turn will contribute to your pet’s overall wellness and lead to a longer, more comfortable life. Pets are experts at hiding pain, so finding dental problems early or preventing them in the first place is important.
The picture above is from a young patient with a relatively healthy mouth. This image shows no evidence of bone loss, with the bone surrounding the teeth being all intact. The picture on the left shows one of our patients that suffered from severe periodontal disease. You can see from the image on the left that the three teeth furthest to the left have considerable bone loss at the gum line which can only be seen by taking an x-ray. Although the teeth were compromised visually as well, the x-ray confirmed that only one extraction was indeed necessary.
You can see only 30% of your pet’s teeth above the gum line, dental x-rays help by showing us the complete picture below the gum line as well. That is why at Pinellas Animal Hospital we recommend an exam with a complete dental cleaning which includes a full mouth dental x-ray package.
